A whole section of the festival was set aside for sports like golf and fencing instruction and to games including CHESS. There were chessboards set up for anyone to play on. There was even be a GIANT LAWN CHESS BOARD set up. This was a particular favorite for kids and families to play together. We had a newly made 4' x 6' club banner Hanging over the table to help get exposure for the club. (See the banner display above)
The club members helped oversee the chess play and tutored some novice players. Some of the members enjoyed just playing at the tables with whoever needed an opponent. I was watching the responses of the public walking by our tables and how many of them stopped in to watch or try playing themselves.
Our guys spent an hour or two helping out. I imagine they spent the rest of their time enjoying the rest of the festival. There was plenty to enjoy: good music, great international cuisine and lots of game for kids and adults.
Planning and engaging in many other social activities like this will go a long way to helping promote the Spartanburg Chess Club and raise awareness and interest in our activities. As a member, you can help out and support your club. It will be something to be proud of.
Help us plan activities with your suggestions of projects you would like to see the club do and that you would like to participate in. This is your chess club. Help us make it your exciting chess club.
